The 20th of June was a memorable day in Claremont, Cape Town as Bernadette Kiewiet's latest book, 'Life's Soiled Red Earth', found its launch amidst the familiar but sad atmosphere of her birthplace. This suburb served as an excellent backdrop for an event that highlighted not just Kiewiet's mesmerizing storytelling, but also the resilience of South Africa's indigenous people, whom she adeptly presents through her prose.

This event held at the Claremont Library was more than just a book launch; it represented a homecoming for Kiewiet. Years ago, her family was evicted from this very suburb by the apartheid government under the Group Areas Act, a painful memory she has channelled into the creation of this compelling work. Yet, the tone of the evening was anything but sombre. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation, camaraderie, and a shared sense of triumph as the audience, a beautiful mix of familiar faces and newfound readers, gathered to celebrate Kiewiet's literary success.

The highlight of the evening was Roselyn Nyman's heartfelt reading from her sister's book. Her review touched on the intricate layers of emotions the book inspired, creating a powerful connection with the audience, many of whom felt the same way. 'Life's Soiled Red Earth' resonated with its readers, leaving them touched by its depth, sensitivity, and powerful narrative that stirred up emotions as vast and varied as South Africa's diverse landscapes. This night served as a reminder that literature can become an incredible tool for reflecting on the past, understanding the present, and hoping for a brighter future.

It was a terrific home-coming book launch at Athlone Library, attended by one of my high school teachers, Mrs Stella Brink (1976), high school friends, Hyram Dooling and Fatima Lakay Hill, primary school friend Angela da Grass (1967) neighbourhood friends, Brian Goosen , Zulaiga Davids and David Appolis, librarians Wesley and Armeen and those who saw the advert in the 'People's Post' article. Thanks for your support and participation in the interesting discussions at this memorable event.

For this very special, personal historical occasion - the FIRST LAUNCH of my novel 'Life Soiled Red Earth', here's a toast to myself, Kuils River Library staff, and all of you that came to support me and thereby, created an exciting and very interesting time. Especially to my husband, Douglas who read a few pages of my book as requested by the public and my former high school friend Hyram Doolings, who lightened up the occasion further with his snippets of these golden years together.

Also, to those who purchased my book, thank you, and please don't forget to leave a review and follow me on the publisher Austin Macauley's website, Goodreads or Amazon.

Another toast to Exclusive Books, Cavendish Square, the FIRST SOUTH AFRICAN STORE, that has offered to sell my book.
